STAIRWELL LIGHTING IDEAS

We use our staircases daily but it is often one of the most dimly lit areas in our homes. A well lit stairwell is not only important for safety reasons, but well chosen lighting can transform a stairway from a functional walkway into a stunning piece of architecture. With that in mind, we have a huge collection of exquisite ceiling lights, wall lights and hanging pendant lights that will brighten up any stairwell or hallway.

5 TOP TIPS

Your hallway or staircase is often the first thing your visitors will see when they enter your home so it is important to make an impression.

This space lends itself to statement lighting that will complement your interior and show off any architectural features.

Hang a light centrally so that it gives good all round light - essential for climbing up the stairs safely, for greeting guests and finding coats, keys, and all those bits and bobs you need when you go out.

Go large - choose as large a light as you can - it will have more visual impact than a small one.

Be bold - choose a colour that contrasts with your decor so that it stands out.

STAIR LIGHTS FOR LOW CEILINGS

Spaces with low ceilings can feel a little cramped so often look better with wall lights which, if fitted high enough, will draw the eye up and make the space feel open. Wall lights are great for brightening up staircases and landings.

LIGHTS FOR A NARROW STAIRCASE

It is a good idea to use small pendant lights to keep clutter away from your walls, or wall lights with a shallow reach so they don't intrude into the space. Using glass shades is a great idea as they will make the most of any natural light and create a sense of space. The reflective qualities of glass bounce light everywhere, adding layers of light and warmth.

HOW TO MEASURE FOR A HALLWAY

STEP 1

  • Stand at both ends of the hall to check for dark spots that will look better when lit.
  • Make sure that you place lights evenly down a hallway and place one close to each end to draw your eye along its length.

STEP 2

  • If you are hanging pendants, we recommend they should be hung at least 2m (7ft) above floor level to give adequate clearance.
  • If you have a low ceiling, choose a pendant that can be shortened.

STEP 3

  • As a rule of thumb, wall lights should be around 1.5m above floor level.
  • You want them to be at least at eye level or slightly above so you don't look directly at the bulb
  • Where space permits they should be around 2 - 3m apart.

STEP 4

  • Add warmth by adding layers of light. Mix wall sconces with table lamps placed on an occasional table or console to create inviting pools of light.
  • Make the most of any available light by using glass shades and mirrors. The reflective quality of glass will bounce light everywhere.

 FAQ

WHAT DO I NEED TO CONSIDER FOR LIGHTING A STAIRCASE?

Stairs are one of the most important areas in your home where you need good general lighting to make sure you don't fall. The key is to create a smooth transition from dark, shadowed areas to light ones to ensure optimal visibility.

Whether you choose wall lights or ceiling lights, it is important that you select lights with wide-angle beams to provide good general lighting.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT HEIGHT FOR A WALL LIGHT?

Generally, you should aim to fit your wall light at eye level, or just above. You need to consider the height of your ceiling, the size of your fitting and features like windows, doorways, architraves and dado rails.

If in doubt, use the 'rule of thirds' and fit the lights two thirds the way up the wall.

See our guide - Lighting Your Home >

WHAT BULBS ARE BEST TO USE ON A STAIRCASE?

We always recommend using LED bulbs as they are long-lasting, energy-efficient and cost-effective. They also don't heat up like incandescent bulbs so are safer to handle when cleaning. Most of our wall lights and some of our smaller pendant lights are supplied with an SBC lamp holder for a 4W LED bulb (40W old style) that is more than adequate for most lighting needs. Our larger ceiling lights are designed with a BC lamp holder for bulbs that are around 5/6W LEDs (50/60W old style).

TOP TIPS FOR PERFECT STAIRCASE LIGHTING.

  1. Use ceiling lights for all round safety - ceiling lights generally provide light with wide beam angles to give the best coverage over an area.
  2. Wall lights - a good alternative to ceiling lights particularly in homes with high ceilings or large stairwells. Wall lights need to be bright enough to see properly but not so bright that they dazzle. Choose glass wall lights or lamps with light-coloured fabrics in cotton or linen for good all-round light.
  3. Choose pendant lights for statement lighting - if you wish to inject some style and individuality along your staircase, opt for pendant lights that provide good light and personality.
  4. External stair lighting - it is important to light up any external steps you have either by choosing adequate outdoor lights in your porch or front entrance or installing downlights such as our Newport Downlighter that can be fitted low to illuminate steps.
