Our first lantern design was the Barnham, made 30 years ago, and inspired by gothic architecture but tweaked for the contemporary home. We continue to manufacture a range of large and small hanging lanterns in glass, brass and black for use as hall lights, staircase lights, roof lanterns, kitchen pendant lights and some are IP-rated for use as porch lights outdoors. Whether hung alone as a striking statement piece, or in a row of 2 or 3 over your kitchen island, dining table or hallway, our lantern collection includes vintage and modern designs to suit all tastes.

LANTERN LIGHT FAQS

HOW HIGH SHOULD I HANG A LANTERN?


Consider the height of your family members and what activities take place in the area. You want to ensure there is plenty of head clearance if you are standing underneth your lantern and if in a kitchen or dining room, you don't want lights blocking the view of the person sitting opposite, or obstructing you when you stand up and sit down.

You may want lights lower over an eating or working area, or higher over a food preparation area.Generally, we advise pendants are hung around 70-100cm above a surface or at least 2m above the floor level.

CAN I ADJUST THE LANTERN'S LENGTH?


Our lighter pendant lights are supplied with 50cm of flex or braided cable only, and can be cut to length on installation. However, we recommend that our heavier pendant lightsand most of our lantern lights, that are supplied with 100cm of chain/cable, are cut to length in our workshop as a bespoke modification.

If you require longer lengths of chain/cable, we can this for you as a bespoke modification for a small additional cost upon request.

Can I Adjust The Length of My Pendant?

HOW BRIGHT DOES MY LANTERN NEED TO BE?


Most of our pendant lights are fitted with bayonet lamp holders for either small bayonet (SBC, B15) bulbs or standard bayonet (BC, B22) bulbs. A few are made with an Edison Screw lamp holder (ES, E27).

Commonly, SBC bulbs are around 3-4 LED Watts (equivalent to a 40-50W incandescent bulb) and BC and ES bulbs are around 6-7W LED (60-70W incandescent).

WHAT LANTERN LIGHTS DO I NEED OUTDOORS?

1. Wall Mounted Lanterns


Great for all-around illumination and saftey lighting for brightening up specific areas that are used frequently, where you need to see what you are doing, such a front or back door, entrance, seating area, or outbuildings. They tend to run off an interior or exterior mains supply.

2. Security Lights



Designed to deter intruders and help you move around safely in the dark - and a great energy-saving feature - these lights are generally designed with a motion sensor and timer that triggers the light to come when movement is detected and go off again after a certain time. Some lights allow you to programme how long the light stays on for and at what distance the sensor detects movement. All our exterior lights can be used with a motion sensor, but we don't manufacture or supply them.

3. Hanging Lanterns


Ideal for porches, under awnings and, if used with a wall bracket, can be hung on walls anywhere around your garden and outbuildings. Lantern lights are perfect for creating a cosy atmosphere for outdoor entertaining option that adds a warm glow wherever you fit it.

4. Festoon Lanterns

Versatile and very easy to install. Can be draped over balcony railings and fences, wrapped around columns and trees and used to define borders and edges. Use hooks or staples to attach to surfaces. They can run from a mains supply, but opt for a battery or solar-powered set if you want to avoid wiring.
