Where double doors are fitted, they are cut with an overlap or stepped edge - called a rebate - in the middle so they fit together and you need a rebate kit to allow a standard mortice lock or latch to be fitted. A rebate is the term given to the L-shaped channel that is cut into the meeting edge of the door to ensure they interlock correctly to close neatly and securely. Generally, the thickness of each door is rebated (channelled out) by a depth of 13, 19, or 25mm, so you need to ensure you have the right sized rebate kit for your door.
Double doors usually have a primary door – the door that is most often used and has the handle or knob mounted on it - and a secondary door that is generally bolted in place at the top and bottom. The rebate kit consits of a set of two metal plates; a lock plate with a spacer bar that extends the lock and is fitted to the primary door, and a strike plate that is fitted to the secondary, overlapping door.
- The rebate kit shown above is for double doors you want to lock.
- This kit is for doors with a rebate (overlap) of 19mm.
- Kit includes a lock packing plate for the primary door and a strike plate for the secondary door.

FAQS
WHY IS A REBATE KIT NEEDED?
Rebated doors are designed to overlap when closed, with a channel cut into the meeting edge of each door to ensure it closes neatly and securely, prevents gaps and provides a better seal against drafts and water ingress.
WHY CANT I USE A STANDARD LOCK?
Standard mortice locks and latches have square edges that do not fit correctly into the channel of rebated doors.
HOW DOES A REBATE KIT WORK?
The rebate kit allows the lock or latch to extend into the rebated channel, ensuring it properly engages with the strike plate on the secondary door.
