For safety purposes, bathrooms are divided into zones and the IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers) wiring regulations indicate what types of lighting can be installed safely in each zone depending on their IP Rating.
All our bathroom lights are IP Rated 44 meaning they are suitable for use in zones 2 & 3.

BATHROOM LIGHTING FAQS

WHAT CEILING LIGHTS DO I NEED?

If you have a small bathroom, or bathroom with a low ceiling, consider a flush mounted ceiling light that will not take up too much space and will ensure you don't hit your head. If you have a larger bathroom hanging pendant lights are ideal as these will add character to a space as well as provide great general lighting. We offer a wide range of glass ceiling and pendant lights that are IP rated for use in bathrooms.

CAN I USE LEDS IN A BATHROOM?

LED lighting is an excellent choice in the bathroom. LED bathroom lights save energy and are easy to maintain thanks to durable lighting technology. You should always ensure that there is very good colour rendering and that the level of brightness is appropriate for your needs. This is especially important in the case of built-in LEDs because these cannot be replaced later on.

CAN I USE FABRIC SHADES?

Yes, you can use a fabric shade in a bathroom as long as the bulb it shields is sealed against water ingress. Our range of Bathroom Candle Shades has been specially designed with unique shade rings to fit our Saunton and Malvern bathroom wall lights.

CAN I ALTER MY PENDANT LENGTH?

Our bathroom pendant lights are supplied with 50cm of cable and can be cut to length on installation. However, if you require a longer length, we can do this for you as a bespoke modification for a small additional cost upon request. For more information, see our guide:

DO I NEED SPECIAL LIGHTS FOR A BATHROOM?

Yes, for safety reasons the electrical parts of all bathroom lights to be installed near a water source such as a bath, shower or sink, need to be sealed against water ingress to prevent electric shocks.

Bathroom lights are given an IP rating to show how well protected they are from water ingress. All bathroom lights fitted in zones 2 & 3 require an IP rating of 44 or above.

WHAT LIGHTING IS BEST IN BATHROOMS?

Good bathroom lighting should involve both general and local lighting to cover the different ways we may use the space. Even small bathrooms benefit from having more than one source of light.

Central ceiling lights - great for providing all-round general lighting for going to the toilet, bathing, showering and cleaning.
Wall lights - strategically placed to provide local lighting around a mirror and sink or vanity unit for specific tasking like washing putting on make-up shaving etc.
Ambient lighting - to create a calm soothing space to relax in.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT HEIGHT FOR A BATHROOM WALL LIGHT?

Generally, bathroom wall lights are fitted above or either side of a mirror over sink units as we tend to block any general light when we stand in front of it. It also ensures you can see adequately for shaving, brushing your teeth and putting on make-up.

We suggest wall lights are installed at eye level, or just above to avoid casting shadows. You need to consider the height of your ceiling, the size of your mirror and features like windows, doorways, architraves and dado rails. If in doubt, use the 'rule of thirds' and fit the lights two thirds the way up the wall.
