Enjoy coloured glass lighting at home

There is something very special about the beauty of coloured glass when light shines through it – think of the awe inspiring coloured glass windows in churches and cathedrals. Its translucent hues have been appreciated ever since people first learnt how to make glass back in the Bronze Age, but it is only fairly recently that we’ve brought coloured glass lighting into the home. Yet it can be one of the most effective ways of shaping the mood of any room, adding depth, interest and a sense of intimacy. Used thoughtfully, coloured glass lights can transform a space into something layered, warm and expressive.

Coloured frosted glass shades

We are thrilled to show you our latest lighting additions, a striking range of coloured glass pendants and wall lights in bold and beautiful jewel colours of amber, teal and smoky grey. Handblown by our skilled glass makers at Suffolk Glass and available in three of our most popular glass shade shapes - the Evesham, Clifton and Hampstead - each one has been frosted for added depth of colour creating an uplifting, vibrant feel by day and an intimate, mediative mood at night.

SMOKED GLASS RANGE

Grey glass lighting is perhaps the most understated of the three colours but it is also the most versatile. Its strength lies in its neutrality. Grey glass softens the brightness of a bulb without dramatically altering its colour creating a diffused, calming glow. This makes it ideal for spaces where you want a relaxed, contemporary feel, such as living rooms or bedrooms.

In a modern interior with clean lines and minimal clutter, grey glass pendant lights or table lamps can add depth without overwhelming the design. To use grey effectively, consider layering it with different textures—such as matte metals, soft fabrics, or natural wood—to prevent the space from feeling too cool or flat. It pairs especially well with monochrome schemes, where it can subtly break up stark contrasts between black and white.

AMBER GLASS RANGE

Amber glass lighting is the warmest and most atmospheric of the three. Its golden hue mimics the glow of sunset or candlelight, instantly making a space feel cosy and inviting. This makes amber glass ideal for areas where comfort and intimacy are priorities, such as dining rooms, living rooms, or hallways. When used in pendant lights or exposed bulb fixtures, amber glass can create a rich, vintage-inspired ambience. It works particularly well with warm materials like brass, leather and dark wood, enhancing a sense of depth and luxury. One of the most effective ways to use amber lighting is to position it at eye level or lower—such as in table lamps or wall sconces—so the warm glow directly influences the perceived warmth of the room.

TEAL GLASS RANGE

Teal glass lighting on the other hand, introduces a more expressive and slightly playful element. Sitting between blue and green, teal has a calming yet refreshing quality that works beautifully in spaces meant for relaxation or creativity. When lit, teal glass casts a gentle aquatic hue that can evoke a sense of tranquillity, making it particularly suitable for bedrooms, bathrooms, or reading nooks. However, restraint is key. Too much teal lighting can overwhelm a space or distort other colours in the room. Instead, use it as an accent—perhaps a single pendant light over a bedside table or a cluster of small teal glass fixtures in a corner. Teal works especially well when paired with neutral backdrops like soft greys, creams, or light woods, allowing its colour to stand out without clashing.

JADE GREEN

Inspired by the soft green tones of natural Jade stone, Jade hues are often associated with tranquillity, balance and harmony, so is used to create a calming feel at home, ideal for spaces where relaxation is key such as bedrooms, reading nooks, or living rooms. The green tint of Jade subtly filters light, reducing glare and producing a gentle, diffused glow that makes the space feel more inviting and less clinical compared to standard white lighting. It also complements both modern, minimalist interiors and more traditional décors adding depth and an air of calm sophistication without overwhelming the space. Jade glass pairs beautifully with natural materials like wood, stone and plants if you wish to connect your indoor spaces with nature.

OPAL & FROSTED GLASS

The milky, translucent appeal of Opal and frosted glass lighting is prized for its ability to diffuse light evenly, eliminating harsh shadows and creating a consistent, warm illumination throughout a space. Opal glass is also incredibly versatile. Its neutral tone works seamlessly with virtually any colour scheme or design style making it a popular choice for functional areas like kitchens, bathrooms and hallways where visibility is important. It is also kind to the eye. Because it diffuses light so effectively, it prevents the stark contrasts that can occur with exposed bulbs or transparent fixtures which makes it particularly beneficial in workspaces such as home offices or dining areas.

COMBINE COLOURED GLASS

The real magic happens when coloured glass is combined. Rather than using them all in one space indiscriminately, consider assigning each tone a role within your home. Grey can serve as the base layer, providing consistent, soft illumination. Teal can act as a highlight, drawing attention to specific areas or features. Amber can then be used to create focal points of warmth and comfort. This layered approach ensures that each colour retains its impact without competing for attention.
