WHICH POLE SHOULD I CHOOSE FOR MY CURTAINS?
Curtain Weight
First of all, estimate whether your curtains are lightweight (unlined voile, linen or cotton), mediumweight (lined cotton, velvet or composite fabrics), or heavyweight (interlined and full length, heavy velvet).
For lightweight curtains you can use any of our pole diameters, but for aesthetic reasons, we feel that for smaller windows a 12-20mm pole will look more in keeping.
For mediumweight drapes use 19/20mm and above.
For heavyweight curtains we would recommend 25mm and above.
Rule of thumb - if the curtains are interlined and the window span is over 2m, use at least a 25mm pole. If in doubt, always size up!
WEIGHT GUIDE
These weights are approximate and for general guidance only and assuming the fabric is 137cm wide:
Standard cotton lining - generally around 160-200g per metre (g/m).
Standard cotton interlining - 550g per metre.
Light/Medium weight linen - 170g - 245g per metre.
Medium weight cotton - 180-230g.
Velvet/Wool - 250-300g per metre.

POLE LENGTH
12mm Poles - the maximum length we would recommend without using a central bracket is 150cm.
19/20/25/38mm Poles - the maximum length we would recommend without using a central bracket is 180cm.
BRACKETS & FIXINGS
Even a strong pole will fail if your wall brackets aren’t up to the job:
Fix into a solid wall or studs, not just plasterboard.
If you have to fix into plasterboard (not recommended) use the correct wall fixings to ensure a solid fix.
Always use a centre bracket if that is the recommendation for your pole length.
Ensure the brackets are rated for the expected curtain weight.
Our brackets are rated for approximately 10-30kg per bracket, when fixed into a solid wall or stud, using the correct length of screw, as supplied with the bracket.
