Outdoor lights for dark skies

As you can imagine, at Jim Lawrence we are very concerned with light. As a British manufacturer of handcrafted lighting and homeware, it's in our DNA to advocate for the joy of  light throughout the home. But in many parts of the country, light from streetlamps, office blocks, shops, advertising hoardings and front porches is stealing the night, causing light pollution that is increasingly been seen as detrimental to all of us.

Whilst many of our outdoor lights are sympathetic to the night sky, we've learnt we too need to learn to embrace the dark more - for our own health and wellbeing as much as for the benefit of the environment and nocturnal wildlife. In the rural corner of Suffolk where we are based, we are lucky to benefit from dark skies. In fact, the nearby hamlet of Thorington Street has become the first place in England to be designated an International Dark Sky Place, and it was their campaigners who approached us, as a local lighting manufacturer, to think about making DarkSky lighting.

"I was approached by my neighbour and long-standing customer, Mrs Brocklebank, who has a great interest in the environment and the DarkSky project," says Jim. "We are fortunate to live in the first Dark Sky community in England and hope our approved lights can make a contribution to other similarly minded communities."

OUR DARKSKY APPROVED LIGHTS

We are delighted that two of our outdoor wall lights, the Boathouse and Glenham Spotlight, have been approved by DarkSky, meaning they can be used in areas where it is desirable, or necessary to control light pollution. We spoke to Nick Bull, our Product Development Manager, to find out more.

First off Nick, what is the DarkSky initiative?

It is an international movement dedicated to protecting the night sky and preventing light pollution. The organisation lobbies governments to introduce dark sky friendly legislation, and partners with universities, community groups and business to encourage us all to use night-friendly lighting so we can protect the nighttime environment, nocturnal wildlife and continue to enjoy activities like stargazing and astronomy while still keeping safe at night.

Why are dark skies important?

In the UK more than 80% of people live under night skies that are too bright to see stars.
It has been shown that excessive light disrupts sleep, our hormones and mental wellbeing.
Wasted light is wasted energy that adds to the carbon emissions that is causing climate change.
Many species of wildlife need the cover of night to feed, breed and migrate.

How did Jim Lawrence first hear about and become involved in the DarkSky scheme?

Some years ago, we were asked if we could adapt the Boathouse Wall Light for a customer who lived within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park area that was working to become dark skies friendly. They needed a downlight that wouldn't cast any light upwards, so we tweaked the design for them.

A few months later we went to a lighting industry meeting where a guest speaker talked about the importance of the DarkSky scheme. He is lobbying the government to make DarkSky lighting standard for all new build homes. We realised we could get ahead of the curve and create some compliant, decorative lighting for homes as most of what was on offer was for street lighting.

Was it difficult to tweak the Boathouse design?

Not really. The design itself didn't change; we just needed to include a suitable bulb and pass some third-party testing. The most challenging part was finding eco-friendly Wago connectors (made from recycled plastic) that weren't necessary for the DarkSky scheme, but we wanted to make the light as environmentally friendly as possible. Once we'd made one successful DarkSky Boathouse, it made sense to make them all the same way.

Tell us about the Glenham Spotlight.

The Glenham was in development at the time we were working on the Boathouse, and we quickly realised that it would also meet the lighting requirements set out by DarkSky, so it made sense to make any small changes before the product was launched.

We feel the Glenham offers a more contemporary option than the more traditional Boathouse. The long term plan is to have a small range of lights that are compliant, including one of our outdoor lanterns - so watch this space!
