As you can imagine, at
Jim Lawrence we are very concerned with light. As a
British manufacturer of handcrafted lighting and homeware, it's in our DNA to advocate for the joy of light throughout the home. But in many parts of the country, light from streetlamps, office blocks, shops, advertising hoardings and front porches is stealing the night, causing light pollution that is increasingly been seen as detrimental to all of us.
Whilst many of our
outdoor lights are sympathetic to the night sky, we've learnt we too need to learn to embrace the dark more - for our own health and wellbeing as much as for the benefit of the environment and nocturnal wildlife. In the rural corner of Suffolk where we are based, we are lucky to benefit from dark skies. In fact, the nearby hamlet of
Thorington Street has become the first place in England to be designated an
International Dark Sky Place, and it was their campaigners who approached us, as a local lighting manufacturer, to think about making DarkSky lighting.
"I was approached by my neighbour and long-standing customer, Mrs Brocklebank, who has a great interest in the environment and the
DarkSky project," says Jim. "We are fortunate to live in the first Dark Sky community in England and hope our approved lights can make a contribution to other similarly minded communities."
We are delighted that two of our outdoor wall lights, the
Boathouse and
Glenham Spotlight, have been approved by
DarkSky, meaning they can be used in areas where it is desirable, or necessary to control light pollution. We spoke to Nick Bull, our Product Development Manager, to find out more.
