Located in the rolling hills of Suffolk’s Brett Valley, Marquis Suffolk blends historic charm with modern comfort. This thoughtfully restored 16th Century pub had been part of the local landscape for centuries and is now a popular hotel, restaurant and bar complete with spa and wedding venue that offers a relaxed countryside escape. Whether you're staying in one of the elegant suites, enjoying contemporary British dishes, or having a drink at the bar, Marquis Suffolk is a great base for experiencing the beauty of East Anglia – all with a touch of Jim Lawrence throughout. We caught up with Marketing Manager Arabella to talk us through the hotel's transformation.

Welcome to the Style Journal Arrabella, tell us a bit about the history of Marquis Suffolk and its transformation from an old put into a much sought after venue. The Marquis of Cornwallis as it was formerly known, dates back to the 16th Century and is Grade II listed. It closed as a public house in 2008, and the building stood empty for a number of years until Steven O’Leary, a successful entrepreneur based locally in Hadleigh, acquired the site in late 2014 and started the extensive renovation work on the original building that was later expanded into the hotel, spa, restaurant and bar that is what
Marquis Suffolk is today!
What was it about this part of Suffolk that attracted you and made you see its potential? We are spoilt for choice in Suffolk for beautiful scenery and great local produce, so to add life back into what was a derelict pub and capture these elements was an opportunity that couldn’t be missed!
Considering its history, there must have been lots of challenges renovating the hotel. How important was it to combine its historic roots with modern ideas of comfort and style, and how did you go about achieving it?We worked very closely with
KLH Architects based near Ipswich, and interior designers
Rendall & Wright, who managed all the plans and interior design for the original renovation of the Marquis, to stay true to the integrity of the listed building's features. The beams for example, are a theme that we caried into the latest expansion areas because they give so much character.
There are lots of features from the original Marquis of Cornwallis that take pride of place, particularly in The O’Leary private dining room and our top bar where the original
fireplaces and bread oven still remain. All of our furniture was bespoke made for us and the colour schemes of
neutral and
earthen tones give an elevated, luxury feel throughout.

Your rooms look incredible. Who did the interior design and where did the inspiration come from?Rendall & Wright, managed all of our interior design from the initial works in 2014 to the present day. The goal was to create a truly unique and beautiful space that stayed true to its rural roots!
There are amazing views from many of the rooms. If you are lucky enough to have a view, what does it bring to a space? I think for so many of us that have very busy lives, there is something so calming about having a rural (
or even seaside) view to muse upon.
The décor throughout is a palette of laid-back neutrals and rich textures with splashes of duck egg and grey greens – what inspired these colour choices and what is the effect you are aiming for? We wanted to encapsulate our
rural surroundings but have a feel of
absolute luxury which we think has been achieved through the bespoke furnishings and décor throughout.

What is your favourite room at Marquis Suffolk and why?Probably the Cornwallis Suite. It is our most requested room and has unparalleled views over the Brett Valley from a private balcony but also plenty of
space to lounge and truly escape for a while!
We are thrilled to see you have opted many Jim Lawrence lights and door fittings throughout, why did you choose us and what do you like about our products? We 100% agree it's important to support
British manufacturing and local businesses, so being able to use a long established local brand like
Jim Lawrence with products manufactured in England was a big win for us. Also knowing that there were so many
incredible designs and styles to choose from gave us confidence that we would have a long term relationship.

Do you have a favourite Jim Lawrence product and why?
Probably the
Fulbourn pendant lights in our new Lounge Bar as they are so elegant and perfectly compliment the gold and marble finishes. Or the
Double Classic wall lights that are in many of our bedrooms because they are both subtle and striking, perfect for the hotel.

What are the key ingredients to creating the perfect stay for your customers?
We truly believe that Marquis Suffolk offers something for everyone, whether it’s a quiet morning coffee, lavish celebratory meal or indulgent experience in our Spa. Now, more than ever, people value memories more than things and to be able to provide a space where guests can make them, is a really special thing.
And finally, what lies in the future for Marquis Suffolk?
This year we have some really exciting events planned which will show off our new venue space perfectly, some incredible weddings and of course an ever evolving food offering in the restaurant! We are currently finalists for ‘Best Boutique Spa’ in the Good Spa Guide national awards so keeping our fingers crossed for a win!
