With a commitment to quality and provenance, the team work closely with some of the region’s finest local producers and artisanal suppliers: a partnership we’re proud to be a part of. Honouring its heritage while embracing contemporary comforts, The Angel Inn offers a warm, stylish setting to relax and unwind, whether you’re joining for a weekend retreat or an evening meal. We caught up with hotel manager, Zeta, to find out what makes The Angel Inn such a well loved retreat.
The Angel Inn

What makes The Angel Inn a unique destination in the Suffolk countryside?

We are a 16th century coaching inn, with traditional features that reflect our heritage, such as our timber framed building, open fireplace and our original well. We maintain a sense of authenticity while offering modern comforts.

We are very fortunate to be in the heart of the Dedham Vale, an Area of Outstanding natural beauty. We’re surrounded by landscapes that have been famously painted by the likes of Constable, Thomas Gainsborough, Cedric Morris and Alfred Munnings. This makes us the perfect location for nature lovers and walkers.

Dining at The Angel

Can you share a bit more about the history of your beautiful building?

The Angel is a charming and historic coaching inn dating back to the 16th century, nestled in the heat of the Suffolk countryside in the picturesque village of Stoke by Nayland. Originally established to serve travellers and locals alike, the inn has long been a vital part of the village’s social and economic life.

Why is working with local producers so important to The Angel Inn’s philosophy?

Working with local producers is important to us at The Angel Inn. We’re committed to providing freshness and quality in our products. Knowing where and how ingredients are produced ensures higher quality control. This allows us to invest in our community by partnering with nearby farms and butchers which are often small, family run businesses, giving back to our local supporters.

Tell us about your dining options, how do local ingredients shape the menu at The Angel Inn?

Using local ingredients is the foundation of our menu. We build our menu around what is available and in season ensuring we elevate and evolve our dishes throughout the year.

You feature a number of our brass Ship’s and Bulkhead lights throughout your outdoor space which look fantastic when illuminated. What drew you to choose these particular outdoor lights?

Your brass Ship’s and Bulkhead lights offer a classic look that complements our heritage. Over time, the brass has softened which adds a sense of age and authenticity perfectly aligning with our building and our stunning garden terrace. When illuminated, they cast a soft ambient glow which sets the tone of comfort and elegance when dining or drinking outside. The brass lights at the exterior also complement our signature brass topped bar in the centre of the restaurant.

How else do you create a comfortable and stylish outdoor dining environment year-round?

We were fortunate enough to work with Tom Hoblyn, the acclaimed garden designer based in Suffolk, whose understanding of landscape and seasonality is reflected in our garden terrace. Hoblyn’s design ensures that our garden transforms gently and gracefully throughout the year, offering guests something different with every visit. The garden has a mix of perennial flowers and an array of herbs, from rosemary and lavender to sage and thyme, to the irises and wisteria.

The garden is brought together by the solid terrace with climbing roses and our beautiful water feature which adds a sense of calm and tranquillity. We have a range of seating areas designed for comfort and flexibility, from relaxed sofas for drinks or informal gatherings, to elegantly arranged tables and chairs for dining.

The rooms at The Angel each feature our bestselling Arlington Pendant: a wonderful choice for period properties that also want to embrace a gently contemporary look. Where do you source inspiration for the décor?

The décor is inspired by the beautiful countryside and The Angel’s historic character combining effortlessly for a contemporary comfort. We collaborated with Amour Interiors, a local interior designer based nearby in Sudbury, Suffolk. Much of the inspiration comes from the surrounding countryside and village setting. From the soft earthy colour palette to textures of linen, wool and aged wood bringing warmth to each space.

Relaxation is paramount in a hotel, what design elements foster a calming and restful bedroom environment?

Every design decision in our bedrooms has been made with rest and comfort in mind and use earthy tones inspired by the Suffolk countryside. The lighting provides the perfect ambiance reflecting the buildings heritage. We invested in luxury mattresses, high quality linen and bedding to ensure a restful night sleep, making the beds the focal point of each room, styled to be inviting and restorative.
