We are a manufacturing business selling direct to the end user, so we don't have any stockists. We do have an extensive showroom at our Suffolk workshop, the address of which is:

Are all your products available to purchase online?
Yes. Our website contains our complete range of products. However you can download the brochure in its entirety or in sections, or If you would like to be sent a copy of our brochure, please fill out the request form.
How do I know you've received my order?
As soon as you place an order online you'll receive an automatically generated e-mail. A member of staff will then check your order within one working day and send you a further e-mail confirmation.
Please check the second e-mail carefully and let us know as soon as possible if any of the details are incorrect. If you do not receive the second e-mail within 2 days please let us know, as this suggests that we haven't received your order.
How long will my order take?
If all the items you've ordered are in stock, we will send your order out straightaway.
Delivery is by a next working day carrier service, so if you ordered on say Wednesday afternoon your order would be despatched on Thursday for delivery on Friday. If you ordered earlier in the day on Wednesday we would try to despatch your order that day for delivery on Thursday, though at busy times of year this isn't always possible. If your order is particularly urgent please let us know and we'll give it priority.

If any of your items need to be made, we will do our best to get your order out as quickly as possible but please allow up to 14 days. Soft furnishings may take a little longer at certain times of year, especially in the run up to Christmas - please see the Soft Furnishings page of the website for the most up to date information.

As above, please let us know if your order is urgent and we'll do our best to send it as quickly as we can.

How much does delivery cost?
Weekday delivery by courier to mainland England, Wales and Scotland is £5.00 per consignment. Saturday deliveries can be arranged for £20.00.
Delivery to Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands, Scottish Islands, Isle of Man, Isle of Wight & Scilly Isles is £18per consignment.
Overseas deliveries are charged at cost. Please contact us for a quote. Alternatively you can place an order online and we will calculate the delivery charge and call you back.
Additional charges are levied for firebacks and firegrates because of their weight.
Small items can be sent by post - please contact us for postage costs. If you place an order online and we think it's suitable to send by post we will change this and refund the cost saving.
Charges are per order, no matter how many parcels are involved, provided the whole order leaves us on the same day.

We deliver to anywhere within the UK and can arrange delivery to most overseas destinations. For overseas deliveries, please contact us.
How do I know my order has been despatched?
We will send you an e-mail when we despatch your order with details of the consignment. You can also track the progress of your order by logging in to your account.
What is your returns policy?

We hope you'll be delighted with your purchase, however, returning any product could not be simpler. Call us on 01473 826685 and we will arrange for the items to be collected at a convenient date. Whilst we are happy to pay carriage costs on any damaged products, should you simply not like the goods and wish to return or exchange them our standard carriage costs will apply. Return carriage costs are £12 within mainland England, Wales and Scotland. You may wish to return small items by post, in which case we recommend that you use an insured form of postage. In either case, please complete the returns form enclosed with your order as this helps us deal promptly with your return.

Returned products should be in fully resaleable condition. Whilst we try to be flexible with returns, we reserve the right not to refund or exchange any products returned more than 6 months after purchase. Our usual refund policy does not apply to made-to-order products, which cannot be returned or exchanged unless faulty. None of the above affects your statutory rights when goods are faulty or not as described. For your rights of cancellation under the Consumer Protection Distance Selling Regulations please see our Terms and Conditions.

About us

Jim Lawrence is a family business, designing and handcrafting beautiful products for the home from its Suffolk workshops. Aside from the quality of the products, the most important things that customers need to know about Jim Lawrence are:

  • If you're not happy with your purchase for any reason we will do our utmost to put that right, or will provide a prompt, no quibble refund if you prefer.

  • All our staff are based at our Suffolk workshop, so everyone you speak to will know our products through and through and can give knowledgeable advice. And if our customer services assistants can't help our engineers, technicians, designers etc are all on hand for advice.

  • Our business is run for the convenience of our customers, not our staff! The delivery and returns pages set out our standard procedures, but if you have a particularly urgent or difficult request we will always deal with it if possible.

The story of Jim Lawrence began in the farm forge in 1993, when Jim started making candlesticks for friends. From their reactions, he realised there was a demand for stylish, designer quality products made with natural materials. Jim was joined in the forge by the farm stockman and today the company employs a skilled team of 90 engineers, welders, painters, seamstresses, lampshade makers, electrical technicians, customer services assistants - to name just a few!

The business outgrew the farm in 2004 and moved to the nearby market town of Hadleigh in Suffolk. There is now a large showroom displaying the complete range of products, and customers no longer have to bump down a farm track to find us. However the heart of the business remains the same - individual, handmade products and the highest possible levels of customer service. Jim Lawrence is a true family business, run by Jim and his wife Sheena and employing up to three generations of local families as well as several pairs of husbands and wives - mainly amicably!

These terms and conditions apply to the use of this Website and by accessing this Website and/or placing an order you agree to be bound by the terms and conditions set out below. You are provided with access to this Website in accordance with these Conditions and any orders placed by you must be placed strictly in accordance with these Conditions.

You warrant that the personal information which you are required to provide when you register as a customer is true, accurate and complete and that you will notify us of any changes.

Indemnity

Purchase of Products

Orders

We will take all reasonable care, in so far as it is in our power to do so, to keep the details of your order and payment secure, but in the absence of negligence on our part we cannot be held liable for any loss you may suffer if a third party procures unauthorised access to any data you provide when accessing or ordering from the Website.

Contract creation

The technical steps required to create the contract between you and us are as follows:
  • You place the order for your products on the Website by completing the checkout process. You will be guided through the process of placing an order by a series of simple instructions on the Website.
  • We will send you an order acknowledgement e-mail detailing the products you have ordered. This is not an order confirmation or order acceptance from Jim Lawrence Traditional Ironwork Ltd.
  • As your order is despatched from our workshop we will send you a despatch confirmation e-mail.
  • Order acceptance and the completion of the contract between you and us will take place on the despatch to you of the Products.

The contract will be concluded in English.

Refund policy

We hope you'll be pleased with your purchase. Should you wish to return anything bought from us, we'll be happy to refund or exchange a product provided it's in fully resaleable condition. Returns should be made within a reasonable time (usually 3 months). Please see below for exceptions to this policy.

If the product returned is not in fully resaleable condition, we reserve the right to refuse a refund on the item, or deduct up to 20% of the original selling price from the refund amount. This does not affect your statutory rights.

Refunds can only be made to the original card of purchase. Refunds to a card other than the original can only be processed under the following circumstances:

  • the original account no longer exists
  • the original account details have expired
  • the order has been placed exclusively with gift vouchers
  • the recipient requires a credit
We're unable to offer a refund or exchange on made-to-measure goods unless they're faulty.

Delivery charges

We'll refund any delivery charge you've paid when a product is damaged, faulty or incorrect but not otherwise. We'll refund the price of the item to the purchaser or exchange the product once it's received by us.*

Cancellation of made-to-measure products

Should you wish to cancel your made-to-measure product for any reason, it's highly unlikely that we could sell it to another customer at full selling price. We therefore reserve the right to charge a cancellation fee of up to 50% of the full selling price once we have started to manufacture the product. In respect of these products our usual refund policy does not apply, and products cannot be returned or exchanged unless faulty.*

*None of the above affects your statutory rights when goods are faulty or not as described. For your rights of cancellation under the Consumer Protection Distance Selling Regulations please see below.

Please note that you do not have a right to cancel this contract under the DSR if you are contracting as a business, or if you have previously inspected the Products. Furthermore, your right to return Products does NOT apply to goods made to your specification.

No waiver by us shall be construed as a waiver of any preceding or succeeding breach of any provision.

In this secure mode the server uses 128bit high level encryption. The secure server software encrypts all information, including credit card numbers, passed between your browser and the server.

We are registered with the Mailing Preference Service and abide by its terms and conditions.

To check the security of our website, simply look in your browser window (often the lower bar) when you fill in your payment details. You will see an unbroken key or closed lock symbol, showing that encryption is active and your information is secure. For security reasons, we strongly recommend that you do not send credit card numbers by standard email but use the secure facility provided on this website.
How many curtain rings do I need?
If your curtain has a pencil pleat (ie gathered tape) heading, the optimum hang is achieved by using one ring every 7cm.
If your curtain has a triple pleat or similar heading, you are likely to need one ring every 10cm, though please check with your curtain maker to be certain.
Because of the size of our mahogany poles and rings, we only recommend one ring every 10cm with them.

Please remember that you need an even number of rings for a pair of curtains!
What shade styles can I choose?
We have put together the attached guide to our shade range. We can also make bespoke shades if you cannot find what you want, so please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your requirements or try out our Lampshade Builder to create your own.
Guide to switches and sockets
Our handmade switch plates are made from solid steel or brass. The plates are available in a choice of finishes, including:
  • antiqued or polished brass
  • beeswax - steel heated almost to black in the forge and dipped into beeswax
  • polished - steel wet polished to bring out a depth of colour and sealed with a clear lacquer
  • matt black - steel powder coated a uniform, hardwearing matt black
  • nickel - brass plated with nickel then flash coated with chrome, to create a reflective metallic finish
  • plain ivory - steel powder coated a uniform, hardwearing soft cream
  • our full range of hand painted finishes

    Plates are available in two styles: bevel edged for a clean, contemporary look or hammered for a traditional, forged look. Because the plates are handmade we can adapt the style if you wish to create your own unique look.

    Outdoor Lighting and IP Ratings Explained
    Outdoor light fittings commonly carry an IP rating which denotes the lights protection against the elements.
    • Your outdoor fitting should have a minimum of an IP23 rating, as this means it is rainproof.
    • Garden fittings that may be subject to splashing water from sprinklers need to have at least an IP44 rating.
    • If you clean your external areas with pressure sprays then look for a fitting with an IP45 rating or above.

    Do i need a left or a right side handle?

    We are often asked how we determine which handle or latch is "left side" and which is "right side" as it tends to be different from one company to the next.

    Our system is in fact very easy to use and works around which side of the door the latch or handle will phyisically be fixed to. The easiest way to determine this is to have a look at which side your hinges are on.

    If for example, your door has the hinges on the left then you will require a right side handle or latch.
    If your hinges are on the right, you will require a left side handle or latch.


    *This applies to all door and window furniture across our website where the product is stated as being left or right sided.

    Do your prices include VAT?
    Yes. All prices on this website include VAT at the current rate of 20%.
    Changing your password
    When we send our customers a new password- whether because they are a previous customer who has never ordered online before or because they have forgotten their existing password- our system generates a random string of letters and numbers which is impossible to remember.
    Therefore we suggest that you change this password as soon as possible.
